Balancing work, family and personal obligations can be hard enough, but when you throw school into the mix many people simply donít have the time or the financial and personal means to make it work. Many schools understand this, and have arranged MBA programs around the busy schedules of working professionals. Courses that can be taken on the weekends leave individuals time to complete their work during the week and still have time to spend with family and friends, all while working towards a career boosting degree.
Weekend MBA programs arenít inferior to more traditional MBA programs in the least. Students will be taking the same courses, often from the same professors as their weekday counterparts. The only major difference between the two types of programs is when the classes are held, which can be the difference that makes it possible for many working professionals and parents to be able to attend. While every university will be different, many will only require students to head to campus every other weekend for courses. These courses may take up the bulk of the weekend, however, and shouldnít be taken as being any less work than traditional classes. Students may also be required to spend their first and last weeks of class on campus so that it is easier for exams, papers and evaluations to be done as well as providing some introduction and orientation for new students.
Because a majority of students in the program will be working while getting their degrees, theyíll be able to immediately take the skills theyíre learning and apply them to the workplace. This can help complex ideas and business theories seem easier to understand as students will get to see how they work firsthand. One other potential benefit to working while attending courses is that students may be able to get their employers to cover some or all of their educational expenses to get their MBAs. While not all employers offer this kind of assistance, it doesnít hurt to check to see if you can reduce the financial impact of your tuition costs.
While weekend courses may not provide the same constant interaction and teamwork as traditional courses, students will have the opportunity to network and work in cohort groups with their peers during the time they are getting their degrees. This can help students to learn new leadership skills and how to work more effectively with people from a wide variety of backgrounds. Even though classes may only meet on two or more weekends a month, most students will be able to finish their degrees in about 18-24 months. This puts them on par with most traditional MBA programs and can make getting an MBA a worthwhile and exciting experience.
