Professional MBA

If you want to get the educational benefits and career potential afforded by a traditional MBA program but canít make the time commitment due to work and family responsibilities, a professional MBA program can be a satisfactory and beneficial alternative. PMBA programs are designed with the busy professional in mind and can help those who are mid-career to get the education they need to change careers or move up in management. The convenient class times and the high quality of programs can make a PMBA a valuable professional investment.

While schools will vary in what they offer for professional MBA programs, a majority hold classes in the evenings or weekends to facilitate working students. Students will take courses in subjects that give them both a general background in business as well as specialized classes that meet their personal and professional needs. This can include courses in areas like finance, healthcare, international business, information systems and marketing, though depending on the program many more options may be offered. These courses will give students the knowledge they need to work with technology, solve business problems, work as a team and employ strategic decision making.

PMBA programs arenít just offered by small schools and colleges. Big name universities like Washington University in St. Louis also offer these kinds of programs. They were created in response to the needs of working professionals and students will find that many of their classmates share their same concerns and motivations. Because programs are offered at world-class universities as well, the educational quality of a PMBA program needs not be compromised. Students will have access to the same high quality professors, coursework and resources as those attending a more traditional class schedule.

Because a majority of students enrolled in a PMBA program will be working, itís worth mentioning that many employers provide funding to employees looking to get an MBA. Check with your human resources department to see if you can get some assistance from your employer in paying for your education to take some of the burden off of you.

The amount of time it takes to get a PMBA can vary. For some students, especially those willing to attend classes over the summer, it can take as little as two years. Other programs, because they only meet once a week may take a little longer and students can expect to be enrolled for about two and a half years. The duration will vary depending on the amount of time a student is able to dedicate and the individual academic institution.
