The term international MBA can be used to describe a couple of different learning situations that students can pursue when earning their degrees. Some schools create MBA programs that are specifically geared towards international students. This is especially common for schools with a large population of foreign students who want to be able to take their skills and knowledge back to their home countries. Of course, international MBAs can also mean programs that are offered from the school or university to those in different countries through online or distance learning programs or through study abroad exchange programs with other universities. This allows students from a wide variety of backgrounds to take advantage of the educational opportunities offered by a particular institution.
There is, however, one more possibility for an international MBA. At some schools, programs under this name are not addressed towards any particular part of the student body, but instead are geared towards preparing students to work in the international marketplace rather than just in their home countries. This can mean taking courses in a large number of global business and economics related topics or even pursing internships that take students overseas to gain valuable work and cultural experience that can bolster their careers after graduation. Language immersion and cultural understand will often form key elements of these type of programs so that students are ready and able to work with employees, consumers and colleagues from around the world.
International MBA programs can take anywhere from just over a year to two years to complete. The duration will depend on the educational institution, whether or not you choose to go full time, and if the program is designed to be accelerated or at a slower pace. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type of situation so make sure you research all of your options before deciding on the method youíll use to get your MBA. Some online and distance learning programs may make it easier for those who want to work while earning their degree to do so.
Those interested in studying international business would be well served by these types of programs as they allow students to not only gain the basic skills and confidence theyíll need to emerge as successful professionals, but offer them the chance to take their learning directly to the countries or areas of the work they are most interested in working with. This can be a great opportunity for many to build language skills and to get a better understanding of the driving forces and culture norms found in these areas. For instance, the Kellogg Business School at Northwestern University offers exchange programs with institutions in Hong Kong, Israel, Germany and Canada, making it easy to see the world and gain invaluable experience. Students may even have the opportunity to combine several elements of different types of international programs into one more comprehensive and fulfilling degree program.
