Virginia, also known as the Old Dominion, has a population of 7,882,590. It has grown by 11.4 percent in the last 10 years. Richmond is the state capital. There were 4,916,428 total jobs in 2008 and workers in Virginia earned more than the previous year with an average annual income of $44,075, up from $43,158. The unemployment rate in Virginia was 6.7 percent in 2009. It went up by 2.8 percentage points since the previous year. The number of residents with a college degree is 29.5 percent. This surpasses the national average.
