Canadian Business schools & MBA Programs
Canadian business schools, like business schools in the United States, aim to prepare ambitious students for leadership opportunities within all aspects of business. Students gain a well-rounded practical knowledge of information systems, management techniques and specific business strategies, as well as a broader understanding of leading teams in a global marketplace. This emphasis on harnessing the business opportunities available through international participation is also similar to American MBA programs, which consistently stress the significance of doing business with a global perspective. Canadian MBA programs, however, are unique in their basic mark-up, and students can choose to earn three different types of MBAs. The first MBA is a general MBA program, similar to a general management MBA in the United States. This program typically lasts about two years. The second type of program is a specialized program, and this MBA can be earned in just one year. Students pick a focused area of study within business and learn how to become leaders in that specific field. The third type of program is a combined MBA, and students must donate four years of study to earn this degree. Students get a solid understanding of the general MBA, as well as time to pursue a specialization. Most American business schools offer 18-month to two-year programs, even if students choose a specialization in addition to traditional MBA training.
Canadian business students pursuing their MBA can specialize in areas like finance, entrepreneurship, the health sector, global management, global strategy, marketing, leadership and others. Some schools also offer a special LLB/MBA program, which combines the study of business and law. Like some American business schools, certain Canadian business schools also offer Executive MBA programs, which are designed for very experienced business professionals who want to further their careers and become top executives, CEOs and senior managers. Executive MBA programs are usually offered in a flexible format, accommodating professionals who already have busy schedules but still want to advance their careers.
A popular trend in American business schools is to offer busy students the opportunity for alternative study. Evening, weekend and online classes are made available so that students do not have to quit their jobs, move to another city, or give up regular professional and personal commitments to pursue their MBA. Canadian business schools also try to offer these alternative study options. During your research for a Canadian MBA program, check the school’s website to find out whether or not they allow you to take online courses or evening and weekend classes.
Canadian universities may operate on different schedules than American schools, and they have different admissions standards as well. Your applications may vary by province as well. For example, a business school in Ontario may have different admissions requirements for a school in Toronto. Check with each school’s particular website for their specific admissions requirements and information to make sure you have all of the correct documents, have taken all of the right exams, and that you are eligible for enrollment.
